And The Oscar Goes To …………This Salad

Salade Oscar

No – I did not watch the Oscars tonight.
In fact, although I am a huge movie fan who watches at least one movie per day, often two and sometimes three, I stopped watching the once glamorous and exciting Oscars years ago, when it had become a boring, extremely drawn-out and pointless parody of its former glory.
So, in order to have my own little oscar celebration, I created my personal version in form of a great dinner, replacing the little statue with the best dish of the night.
While avocados, nectarines, red onions and pears in a dressing of lemon juice and sweet Thai chili sauce might not seem to be nominees that fit into the same (salad) category, here they share the top honors for my new favorite salad 🙂
For obvious reasons, I’ll call this salad “Salade Oscar”
Best supporting actor – bone-in rib eye steak 🙂
In the end, a great (show) dinner, lots of applause (Bella, for the steak) and I walking away with yet another trophy (salad) 🙂

Mango, Peach And Yogurt Smoothie

>
>
My  old standard smoothie recipe used to be ice, fruit, ice cream and lots of liquor.
I could never get enough of those rum and/or vodka spiked concoctions, which I drank by the bucketful and although they had quite a kick, they always made me feel that I am drinking healthy, what with all that fruit in it…… 🙂
So after I went cold turkey two years ago, I never felt the craving for smoothies, because frankly – no booze? – then what’s the point ?
But then somebody treated me to a smoothie about a week ago and I was hooked again. That particular smoothie was made with just mango and ice, no other ingredients. Although it was pretty good, it was at the same time lacking some more refinement, either in the form of some booze 😦 or some other taste and texture enhancer.
So today I had these slightly over-ripe mangos and nectarines in the cupboard, yogurt in the fridge and thanks to modern appliances, Ice is always just a push of a finger away at the ice-dispenser. I added a bit of organic honey, some 2% milk  –
And just like that, Voilà ! My new favorite drink was born 🙂

Latkes With Caramelized Nectarines

>
>
Latkes, kartoffelpuffer, reibekuchen, potato pancakes, bramborák, draniki – a hundred different countries, a hundred different names for the same amazing potato dish. Jewish in origin, it has found its way into a myriad of other cuisines were it has become a beloved dish of longstanding tradition.
Potato pancakes are very popular in Europe and particularly in Germany, where you can find “Puffer Kiosk”s on many streets, at fairs and festivals and of course in many restaurants and in many homes, were they will be served by themself as snack, or accompanied by fruits, or part of savory dishes, with bacon, fish or other proteins.
I have eaten and loved “Kartoffelpuffer ” ever since I had the first ones at our home, lovingly prepared by my mom. At our home they were always served with apple sauce, no exception.
Tilly was not the world’s greatest cook, but she made the best potato pancakes – period. Memories…….. 🙂

Summer Feast Salad

>
>
Today  the temperature was hovering around 100F and the humidity was almost unbearable.
So what, you say; You have A/C, you say….
Well, we do, but Bella and I spend half a day  at the Topeekeegee Yugnee Park, which is just a few miles up the road from our house. It was very relaxing and beautiful, but oh so hot.
So when we got home, a light meal was in order and what better than a salad and a pool of iced tea to cool a scorched body down 🙂

P.S.
I usually don’t use much fruit in my salads, but the firm, slightly tart nectarines perfectly complimented the cheese, salad and nuts.
P.P.S.
Instead of croutons I used tarallini (Small  Taralli , (sometimes marketed as “Italian Love Knots”)

” Dirty Dozen: EWG Reveals List Of Pesticide-Heavy Fruits And Veggies “

An Apple A Day……..

Excerpt from the HUFFPOST :

….. And while the list is comprehensive, the ranking doesn’t capture all information:
For example, though apples were ranked as the most contaminated overall,
imported nectarines had the unique distinction of having a full 100 percent
rate of positive pesticide test results, above any other product. Bell peppers
and grapes were both commonly contaminated with 15 different pesticides
in a single sample — the highest overall diversity of contamination.

Still, even the researchers who conducted the pesticide exposure studies
don’t recommend giving up the “Dirty Dozen” outright.
