Fritto Misto

It  is time for me to confess:  I am a food-shopping maniac. My kitchen usually contains enough fresh, dried, frozen and pickled food to feed a family of four for a few weeks. So, every couple of months I give myself the daunting task to empty my cup board, fridge and freezer completely in order to be able to start replenishing all over again.  So today, after two weeks of feeding myself and Bella with all the goodies already in the house, I finally achieved my goal: (my iron-will was victorious) – all food is gone and tomorrow morning I will start a new crusade to the butcher, grocery store and farmers-markets to make sure I have again enough food in the house, just in case………. ???? – well, something, you never know.

(My friends who live in the neighborhood will remember that after the last major hurricane left our area for nearly three weeks without electricity, Maria and I hosted daily free lunches in our garden for 20 to 30 people, sometimes a lot more. Tasty food from the grill and fire pit and plenty of beer and even more wine, all nicely cooled in the lake. What a blessing our full freezer and pantry proved to be then ) 🙂

But, let’s get back to the topic at hand.
The remaining few things I had left in the freezer were some squid, a few small shrimp, a piece of cod filet and in the fridge a bit of greens, lemon, scallions, an onion and some grape tomatoes . Perfect !
Some oil, vinegar, salt and pepper for the salad, the seafood marinated with cayenne pepper, kosher salt, granulated garlic and dusted in rice flour, two chilies and the scallions thrown into the mix, then quickly deep-fried and Voilà – Fritto Misto !   Life is Good !

  1. Hi Hans:

Nice article on cleaning out the frig., freezer and pantry to move the old food, and bring in the new, plus we now clean the equipment, for all the nice additions in food and beverage, that will fill everything up again. The Frito Misto, is a very nice dish, and quite easy to prepare, you finally moved all remaining food to this nice dish, we all have to be creative in the kitchen, and make use of everything, reducing waste and any potential spoilage. Was that a Habanero Pepper I saw? These things are powerful, I hope it was just for Garni? I ate one once, burned up all day and night, I’ll stick to Jalapeno’s and Serrono’s.

You and Maria were very kind in your generosity in caring for you friends, when the Hurricane hit you area, feeding 30 more people daily, is not an easy task, but I’m sure everyone was most appreciative, especially having a top chef and his wife in the out door kitchen, prepare great dishes, with beer and wine, turning a tragic event, into a pleasant and memorable time when neighbor’s do help each other when things turn difficult for all. I have much praise for Maria and you, for helping those in need, in a time of tragedy.

Warm regards to you and Bella, I know Bella had a lot of fun, just watching all the movement in the kitchen, during the clean out of the frig., freezer and pantry. I’m sure she got a lot of nibbles for being in the right place, at the right time.

All the best Hans and Bella!

    1. Hi Vincent and Elli.
Always nice to hear from you and read your kind comments.
I love spicy food on all heat-levels, so chilies are some of my favorite condiments 🙂
As for Maria, she was the kindest woman you can imagine and I try to live my remaining live by continuing in her giving and caring spirit as much as I can.
      Greetings,
      Hans.
