We can get these cheeses, we just can’t get the uberdelicious unpasteurized versions that they offer in Europe. If you’ve ever eaten real French fromage you would understand. Your ammendment allows you the right and that’s fine, but the use of an automatic weapon outside of war is not something that you could debate. In a country that barks about the strongest army in the world, protection at home should not be something that needs to be guarded with automatic guns. Police use pistols, I’m sure you’d survive. Now to purchase a fully automatic version you must first get your class 3 license and this only happens if you live in a class 3 state and you can pass a 6 month federal background check. Now that you are licensed you may purchase your first automatic weapon. The cost of these guns range from $10,000 to over $120,000 and there is another six month waiting period. Now to address the ammo stick piling issue. All I have to say is when the world goes to shit and you need a friend to protect you, you can come to my house. There are more than enough guns and ammo to go around as I was raised in a military family. Until then hunting and target shooting are loads of fun and when they are not being used everything is under lock and key.

Well the automatic weapons we can get in the U.S. are pretty hard to get legally. I also failed to mention that you also need the approval of the chief of police for your city, and once you have all the permissions in place you now have given legal right to the authorities to search your property at will with no warrant. As several poster have already done. The average 24 year old is not getting his hands on these weapons.
Its a shame that 13 people lost their lives, but if the moron was to have used what was at his apartment, the number of dead and wounded would have been much larger. The moron was very intelligent. I’m sure that he picked up the ingredients for those items at the hardware store and Walmart.

As a French Officer stationned here in the US, I must say that sometimes some people seem confused figuring out their “rights” from their “duties”. Here’s my two cents:
– As a soldier, it is my “duty” (my job, as well) to carry and use an assault rifle.
– As a citizen, it is my “right” to purchase and eat the food I want. The finest cheeses made on earth, for instants. Why would anyone ever deny me this pleasure, this freedom? Seriously, is that for real?

Arguments notwithstanding – we DO have gun laws. We DO have background checks. The image was NOT really real – because of the laws on most of the weapons shown. Yes the murderous wingnut in Aurora did buy his stuff legally. Other murderous wingnuts have not.
Assume you DO take the guns away – people who have wanted to kill… with or without a gun… will kill. People who want to maim, hurt, swing out at others will do so, and have done so for centuries without the need for a gun… since we as a species first picked up rocks and beat someone over the head with them.
The assumption that you can ban anything (guns OR cheese) and prevent harm is false. It’s based on a false premise that we can control how people behave and by conclusion remove the danger that we pose to each other is a magic wish, and also not real.
If we as a society think we can regulate behavior by law, than by all means, write laws against butter, soda, bread, automatic weapons, cars, advertising, and nudity. I would be interested to see how the law against large soda’s in NY have any impact on childhood obesity. I seriously doubt it.
This is a dangerous path to go down, but then again – (and I didn’t say this – I found it elsewhere) – the price of safety is freedom.

PS; I have been to France, and Germany – I was raised on unpasturized milk, and don’t own a gun but my family does. Somehow I’ve survived. That doesn’t stop someone from taking a truck and taking me out along with 8 or 10 others in a nasty freeway crash just because he or she wants their name in lights or to make a point…. all without any guns OR cheese.
Since I am not a member of “a well regulated Militia” I am not in the need of any guns.
However, I m a cheese aficionado. In the event an assault on my person is imminent, I take the lid off the jar with the Limburger cheese. Any armed, brave, red-blooded American male is rendered defenseless by THAT weapon.
